Extracurricular

I’m currently working on producing the first ever coffee table art photo book capturing the british boy racer culture. The photos will be taken during spring ‘12 and the book be published later in the year.

It all started back in 2006 when I visited the Merry Hill Shopping Centre in Dudley, West Midlands, with a friend. It was late in the evening and when we returned to the car it wouldn’t start. I called RAC and was told to wait an hour for assistance to arrive. As the other shoppers where leaving and the dark fell the car park was taken over by, what my friend explained to be, boy racers. This was my first encounter and I found the subject matter intriguing.

Over the years I’ve noticed that when people hear or read the words ‘boy racer’ they react immediately but differently, internal images appear and emotions surface; embarrassment, fear, jealousy or perhaps even lust. Few topics are potent enough to provoke this range of associations which is exactly why this project is inherently viral and will get everyone talking. We are going to instigate this discussion in a way that has never been done before, through an artistic lens.

The story about the boy racer is really about something bigger, it is part of our contemporary urban history and as such it deserves to be documented.
